Hot! Suns Segway to Spain

As tipoff for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals approaches, I take a quick segway back to happy hour in Madrid three years ago. I was in the middle of a 9 hour layover trying to see as much of the city as possible when I took a break in a backstreet courtyard. Like most of Madrid, it was bustling with people, and as evening neared, most were out for their happy hour stroll.

I ordered a beer and joined the merry Spaniards. As I wrote in my journal, I saw a Segway in action for the first time. These two-wheeled mega scooters always looked cheesy in video, but this man had a charisma to spare. He owned the room, and neighbors called out to him as he came up. He stopped to chat, never dismounting his 21st Century steed. When his lady friend met him for their date, she joined him on back of the the Segway, and as the rode off into the sunset, everyone in the courtyard waved goodbye.

Flash forward to a much quieter Tempe, Arizona where I joined friends to watch the Suns vs. Lakers match up when a man on a Segway appeared. I recalled my Spainish experience, and Chris stepped up to the challenge. Soon, I was getting a quick tutorial on driving what still looks like an oversized vacuum cleaner.

It was a random – and fun – experience on a Monday night. I wish I could say the same for the game.
