Hot! Rock Stars

The Red Rock Rendezvous is quickly becoming a legendary climbing festival. In only its fifth year, it is bringing together more than 1,000 climbers from around the world. Many come from colder climates to enjoy the warm spring Las Vegas weather and the stunning red rock formation. There is climbing for all skill levels in the park and stellar multi-pitch routes including the epic Epinephrene – a 2,000 foot, 15 pitch route.

Josh and I made the trip for the first time this year and the gathering more than lived up to its hype. Stories of the Fat Tire truck filled with kegs of beer that are tapped every night for dinner were true. Tales of the wicked winds that sweep through the camping field each evening also true, but Josh expertly secured our tent and then took bets on which ones would fall. And the A list of world-class climbers teaching the clinics was also true.

I continued to meet people I had read about in magazines. I never hope to emulate them – their skills well beyond what I will train for – but to hear their stories and learn from their experiences is always fun. I took a Fall Safe class from Chris Linder and Top Rope Anchors from Kate Rutherford. I hung out with Chris Schulte – a Black Diamond boulderer I first met at the Joshua Tree Climb Smart fest.

My only regret is that I did not meet Arno Ilgner, author of The Rock Warrior’s Way. This book on mental training for the climber had a big impact on my life. I’ve read it three times, but passed on taking his class. My mistake, but just another reason to put Rendezvous 09 on the calendar already.
