Hola Mexico

Hola Mexico

On my first visit to the heart of Mexico, I managed to avoid the infamous hordes of people for nearly a day. I arrived after midnight, slowly went through customs, then walked up to the taxi stand and was whisked away through the empty streets of Mexico City towards the Historic Center. It was strange to see a city so known for the millions of people that inhabit it so deserted.

My hostel was in the pedestrian area near the Temple Mayor and the National Palace – once the home of the president. It was surrounded by police, even at 2am. In the morning, the streets slowly filled with vendors and I took the metro to the bus station – again not crowded, and very easy to use.

Once back I explored the area. To the east was the discount zone – anything you can imagine for mere pesos. I had forgetten my watch and bought a new one for $2. After eating a taco and getting ice cream with the locals – at Burger King – I moved to the west side. This was the business district, filled with American and European stores, small cafes and the all people I had heard about. I had two Coronas for $3 because, well, it was only $3. Mexico so far has been very affordable!
